On April 4, 2018 the Seattle Public Schools (SPS) School Board selected Denise Juneau as the preferred candidate for Superintendent starting in the 2018-19 schoolyear. The final selection is pending contract negotiations which will be voted on at the April 25, 2018 Board meeting.
Ms. Juneau joins SPS after serving as the State of Montana’s Superintendent of Public Instruction since 2009. As a descendent of the Blackfeet Tribe, she was the first American Indian female elected to statewide public office in Montana. During her career in education, she has also served as an educational support staff member, high school teacher, instructional specialist, and Director of Indian Education for the State of Montana.
Juneau was selected from a pool of highly qualified candidates after a nationwide search. Her selection by the SPS School Board comes after review of feedback collected from the community (families and students) and SPS staff, as well as interviews by the Board, SPS leadership, and labor representatives.
