Crossposted from Community Partnership

We are excited to release this year’s Professional Development Calendar for Education Partners! We have a great mix of workshops offered by both Seattle Public Schools staff and partners, which are responsive to your training requests and also support alignment to our new strategic plan. You’ll find a calendar overview on pgs. 1-2 and detailed info, including registration links, starting on pg. 3.

Exploring Structural Racism – 9/26/19, 9:30am-12:30pm:

This training provides foundational information and examples of historical and current-day structural racism, along with data on persistent racial disparities. Through this workshop participants will understand what structural racism is and how it contributes to inequitable outcomes based on race; identify connections between historical racial injustices & present-day realities for young people and communities of color; and begin exploration of strategies to work towards racial equity. REGISTER HERE.

Fall Partner Kick-Off – 10/3/19, 9:00am-12:00pm:

With the launch of our new strategic plan, Seattle Excellence, the School and Community Partnerships Department is excited to welcome our partners to the 2019-20 school year and work collectively to improve outcomes and experiences for students furthest from educational justice. You will hear from Superintendent Juneau, Cashel Toner, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and Keisha Scarlett, Chief of Equity, Partnerships, and Engagement, about key priorities of Seattle Public Schools for this school year. These include our focus on building strong systems of support for African American boys and supporting our students to meet 3rd grade reading benchmarks. We will also have an opportunity for partners to meet with SPS content leads in your respective areas of focus, e.g. math, literacy, health, discipline, etc., so you can build relationships and learn about department priorities and initiatives. REGISTER HERE.

Supporting Super Readers: Aligning Reading Comprehension Supports to the SPS Literacy Curriculum – 10/10/19, 9:30am-12:30pm:

Designed for community partners who work with K-5 students and want to help improve reading comprehension. Learn how to change your approach to reflect what is happening in our elementary classrooms by exploring strategies and philosophies connected to our most recent literacy adoption, Collaborative Classrooms. Together we will practice using texts to apply culturally responsive strategies such as open-ended questions, probing, wait time, and neutral response. We will also discuss the impact of these strategies on our diverse student populations. This session is designed for both literacy-focused programs and more general education/youth development programs. REGISTER HERE.

See the rest of the workshop line-up here. Please reach out with any questions, and we hope to see you soon!
