Rachel Haas, PHSKC Graduate Practicum Student

What path led you to school health work?
I am a first year Graduate student at the University of Washington in the School of Public Health. Part of our program requirements are to complete a 6-month practicum project where we work to put our knowledge to use, and gain skills working in a public Rachelhealth setting. I have a background in health education, and was excited about the opportunity to work for Public Health – Seattle & King County. The school based health centers provide amazing services for students, and I feel very fortunate to be a part of their work.

What do you like best about your job?
In my short time here in the Community Health Services division, I have enjoyed the welcoming environment that my supervisor and staff have created. They have made this a safe, warm, and inviting place to learn and grow. I also am very interested in elementary school education so it has been exciting to learn about the intricacies of the Seattle Public School system.

What is a big challenge?
The biggest challenge is that I am only here one day a week. I am really excited about the work I am doing, and would love to be making more of an impact!

What is something unusual that most people don’t know about you?
I have a big family – I am the youngest of four, I have 5 nieces and nephews (6 come June 2015), and my entire immediate family lives in Bremerton, WA. I also traveled to Europe this summer and fell head over heels in love with Paris. I can’t wait to go back!
